Prevention
Once we have accessed the backend of your website we should be able to see how the infection has gained access, what it’s doing, remove it and then fix the security issue. Just as every infection is different so is the solution. Here are some general steps every website owner should take to keep themselves safe.
- Username and passwords should be held by you and you alone. If your web designers make any changes to your website then they need to change the passwords to make sure that you are the only one with it.
- Don’t email passwords- make sure passwords are kept as a paper copy by the owner.
- If you or your web designers have an FTP programme, (this is the programme you use to upload your website on to the server), make sure you delete any records of usernames and passwords once you have finished.
- Get yourself some good antivirus and spyware removal. By calling your local computer technician they will recommend and perhaps install something along the lines of Avast antivirus and Superantispyware. Once it's on your computer make sure that you use it.
- Don’t have two antivirus programmes running at the same time as they often cancel each other out.
- Don’t open unsafe items unless you have scanned them.
- If you have an ecommerce website make sure that you use a good recommended payment gate and if required install a SSL certificate.
