Why me?
In most cases it’s nothing personal, it’s usually the infection/infector finding a way to gain access to your website without permission. This can be done in many ways:
- Maybe you have an infection within your computer to collect FTP information and pass this to the source
- Manually hacking a script to find your username and password
- Often guestbooks are a common and easy target
- Perhaps if you use a content management system the system you use is out of date and needing security updates installed
- Perhaps the web designers that designed your website were hacked- designers are often a target as they have many domains for the hackers to infect
- The file permissions could have been setup incorrectly on your server making you an easy target
- The infector could be watching what you do with spyware
- Unsecure hosting
There are many ways that a hacker will gain access and keeping up is difficult as the technology is always changing and techniques become better and more efficient.
What are they doing with my website?
Unfortunately these people are, plain and simply, criminals. Your website could be used for a great number of things including, but not limited to:
- Illegal storage - credit card details, identity details, development sites for fresh viruses, illegal pornography
- Infection- spreading files to unprotected computers to collect detailed information
- Malware - spamming programmes sending illegal emails or loading advertisements
